Our project is focused on Wadeye (formerly known as Port
Keats), a town in Australia's Northern Territory about 6
hours' drive southwest of Darwin. The region around Wadeye
is sometimes referred to as the Thamarrurr region, a name
that has been taken on by the local
Thamarrurr Regional Council, one of the
sites selected for the
COAG trials. There are some some 2200
people living in the Thamarrurr region from 20
different patrilineal clan groups and representing a
number of different languages, including
Murrinh-patha, Marri Ngarr, Marri
Tjavin, Marri Amu, Magati Ke and Jaminjung.
